About The Tour

Sekrenyi, the most significant festival of the Angami Nagas, is a vibrant celebration of purification, renewal, and unity. Observed during late February in the Angami lunar month of "Kezei," the festival is deeply rooted in the agricultural traditions of the tribe. The villages of Khonoma and Kigwema, situated in the Kohima district, are among the most notable places to experience this cultural extravaganza, where traditions come alive amidst breathtaking landscapes.

Khonoma, renowned as India’s first green village, boasts a rich history of ecological conservation and resistance to British colonization. During Sekrenyi, rituals such as "Dzuseva," a ceremonial bath symbolizing purification and renewal, take center stage. The villagers engage in traditional dances, folk songs, and games, celebrating community bonds and paying homage to their ancestors.

In Kigwema, famous for its traditional Angami architecture, the festival includes rituals like "Thekra Hie," where families and friends gather to share food and stories, strengthening communal ties. Both villages adorn themselves with vibrant colors as villagers don traditional attire, showcasing the intricate artistry of their heritage.
Adding to the cultural richness of the region is its historical significance from World War II. Nagaland, particularly Kohima and its surrounding villages, played a pivotal role during the war. The Battle of Kohima, fought in 1944, was a turning point in the Burma Campaign, marking a decisive victory for the Allied forces over the Japanese. Villages like Khonoma and Kigwema bear silent witness to this history, with war cemeteries and memorials standing as poignant reminders.
Today, Sekrenyi is not just a festival but a bridge connecting the past with the present, blending age-old traditions with the echoes of history, all set against the stunning backdrop of Nagaland’s hills and terraced fields.
